The Performance Lab: Beyond the Physical

Building the Headspace to Compete at the Highest Level.

The Mental Side of the Game: Helping Alberta’s Young Athletes Navigate the Gap Between Talent and Performance.

Every athlete eventually hits a wall that physical training can't break down. Whether it’s game-day nerves, a loss of confidence after injury, or the crushing pressure of high expectations—the mental game is often the hardest one to win.

I don’t approach this as a theorist. I approach it as someone who has lived the highs and the deep lows of competitive sports right here in Alberta.

A Journey of Performance, Failure, and Recovery

My background isn't a straight line to success. It’s a series of lessons learned the hard way:

  • The Early Success: By age 16, I was ranked #1 in the world in two different video games—By 18, I was the #1 scorer in Alberta for Grade 12 basketball Provincials and a scratch golfer with many scholarship offers. I had the stats and the raw talent, but I didn't yet have a system to manage the internal pressure.

  • The Mental Wall: I chose a basketball scholarship and went to play for Hall of Fame coach Phil Allen. But even under a legendary coach, I struggled. One of the hardest parts was being told by Phil that I should have gone to America to play golf instead. Navigating that kind of pressure and identity doubt was a factor among many that caused my performance to drop so significantly that I eventually walked away from sports to travel. I know exactly what it feels like to have the talent, but lose the "headspace" required to execute.

  • The Rebuilding Phase: Years later, I found my way back through extreme sport environments. I went from being paralyzed by a fear of heights to studying adventure guiding under Ross Cloutier (leader of Canada's first Everest expedition)— Eventually I was climbing high level technical Rock and Ice Climbing routes in the Canadian Rockies, India, Peru, Australia and more.  From those heights to navigating 20-foot waves surfing, I had to learn how the mind works when the anxiety gets loud. At some points, I was living in tents and vans for months to fund my training, keeping my composure in situations where "zoning in" was a matter of survival.

What I Offer Your Athlete

I’ve spent my life studying how we perform—whether training under legendary mountain guides or coaches, mastering the focus required for elite craftsmanship, or applying neurological principles to accelerated learning. I offer a grounded, practical approach for athletes who are:

  • Struggling with Performance and "Clutch" Moments: Learning to regulate the mind and body when the stakes feel high.

  • Battling Imposter Syndrome: Moving from "I hope I’m good enough" to "I belong here"—handling the internal and external critics.

  • Facing Burnout: Finding a sustainable way to stay competitive without losing the joy of the sport.

  • Frustrated by Slow Progress: Using accelerated learning techniques to map new skills faster.

A Different Kind of Conversation

I’m not a "celebrity coach." I’m a professional counselor and a fellow athlete. I’ve worked in clinical settings and seen the flashy, often superficial side of the sports psychology business.

Note to Parents: Because I am a registered mental health provider, sessions are typically covered by most major extended health insurance providers. I provide a professional receipt for you to submit for reimbursement.

I share my background not to look back at the highlights, but to show you that I’ve stood exactly where your athlete is standing—facing the gap between high potential and the mental barriers that get in the way.

Beyond sports and the mountains, I have dedicated my life to the pursuit of professional craftsmanship. As an accomplished  bookbinder and bowyer, I create high-precision tools and works of art that require absolute focus and a mastery of fine detail. I bring that same 'standard of excellence' to my work with athletes—teaching them that whether you are on the court or in the workshop, the psychology of mastery remains the same.

My goal is simple: To give your athlete the tools I wish I had when I was 18. If your son or daughter is talented but struggling to find their zone, let’s have a straightforward conversation about how to get them back on track.
